R U OK?

R U OK? is an Australian non-profit suicide prevention organisation that was founded in 2009 by Gavin Larkin. Here’s a brief history of the organisation:

Origins

The idea for R U OK? stemmed from Gavin Larkin’s personal experience with suicide. In 1995, Larkin’s father Barry died by suicide, leaving his family devastated. About a decade later, Gavin Larkin found himself struggling with his own mental health issues despite seeming to have a successful life.

Founding of R U OK?

In 2009, Gavin Larkin decided to honour his father’s memory by creating a national day of action focused on suicide prevention. He collaborated with Janina Nearn to develop the concept, which eventually became R U OK?. The organisation was founded with the belief that a simple conversation could potentially change a life and prevent suicide.

First R U OK? Day

The inaugural R U OK? Day was held on November 29, 2009. The campaign’s message was “a conversation can change a life,” encouraging Australians to connect with others who might be struggling.

Growth and Impact

Since its inception, R U OK? has grown significantly:

  • By 2009, Yahoo!7’s Sunrise reported that 650,000 conversations had taken place as a result of the campaign.
  • As of 2020, almost 80% of Australians were aware of R U OK? Day, with a quarter having participated.
  • The campaign has enlisted support from numerous Australian celebrities, community leaders, and athletes.

Ongoing Legacy

Sadly, Gavin Larkin passed away from lymphoma in 2011. However, his family has continued to champion the cause, ensuring that R U OK? lives on. The organisation now holds an annual day of action for suicide prevention on the second Thursday of September. R U OK? continues to promote mental health awareness and suicide prevention through various initiatives, including developing resources for people struggling with life and those around them to help notice warning signs of crisis
