Phishers are increasingly targeting job applicants by posting fake job listings on popular job sites, with students being the primary target. But not to worry. With our what-to-do’s, you’ll sniff these fraudsters out in no time.
What typically happens is that someone, often a student, comes across a (fake) job listing on a trusted job platform, hoping to find a part-time job. Shortly after applying, they receive a WhatsApp or LinkedIn message from someone claiming to represent the hiring company. After exchanging information, setting up an interview, and – crucially for the scammer – sharing banking details, the applicant would visit the company for their interview only to find out that no such position or recruiter exists. And by then, it’s too late: the scammer will have emptied the victim’s bank account.

Job seekers, particularly students, are increasingly vulnerable to sophisticated scams where fraudsters pose as employers or recruiters. Vigilance is essential when sharing personal data online, even on trusted platforms.
